But how do you conduct engaging recruiting interviews that help you assess candidates’ skills, personality, and fit for your company culture? What questions should you ask? How can you gauge candidates’ actual abilities?
In this article, we share more than 125 sales recruiting interview questions to help you boost your sales hiring success rate.
Your Guide to Sales Interviews
6 Tips for Productive Interviews
Before we get into the questions, here are six tips to help you conduct productive recruiting interviews.
1. Prepare well
Have a clear idea of what you’re looking for in a sales rep and what questions you want to ask to evaluate their qualifications and potential. In addition, before the interview, review the candidates' resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, and do some research on their background, achievements, and interests.
2. Build rapport
Start with a warm introduction. Make the candidate feel comfortable and welcome. Tell them a bit about yourself, your role, and your company. Ask them some icebreaker questions to get to know them better and establish a connection.
3. Ask open-ended questions
Instead of asking yes-or-no questions that can limit the candidates' responses, ask open-ended questions that can elicit more information and reveal their thought process, creativity, and problem-solving skills. For example, instead of asking, "Do you have experience in selling software?", ask, "Tell me about a time when you sold software to a challenging customer. How did you approach them, what was your value proposition, and how did you close the deal?"
4. Use behavioral and situational questions
Behavioral questions are based on past experiences and actions, while situational questions are based on hypothetical scenarios and situations. Both types of questions can help you assess how the candidates would perform in real-life sales situations and how they align with your company's values and culture.
For example, "How would you respond to a customer who says they are happy with their current solution and don't want to switch?", or, "How do you deal with rejection and keep yourself motivated?" These questions can help you evaluate their sales skills, techniques, and mindset.
5. Give the candidate a chance to ask you questions
This can help you gauge their interest, curiosity, and research about your company and product. It can also give you an opportunity to sell them on the benefits of working for you and address any concerns they might have.
6. End the interview on a positive note
Thank them for their time and interest. Tell them what the next steps are and when they can expect to hear from you. Ask them if they have any questions or feedback for you.
